What skills did you develop as a math major that helped prepare you for medical school?

Being able to think through difficult problems and understand conceptually challenging material is something I face daily as a medical student. My training as a mathematics major strongly prepared me for this, as it taught me how to approach complex ideas, persist through challenging concepts, and develop a deep understanding during my studies rather than relying on memorization. Those skills have been essential in navigating the rigor of medical school.

As an undergraduate, I was also a member of the Wake Forest Baseball Analytics team and served as Co-Director of Analytics. This experience similarly shaped my approach to medicine by reinforcing problem solving, collaboration, and quantitative reasoning to real-world problems. I would not have been afforded this opportunity, or been as successful in it, without the foundation provided by the mathematics department.

What was your favorite memory about Wake Forest and the Department?

No single moment stands out because I genuinely enjoyed my entire time at Wake Forest. Some of my favorite memories come from the countless hours spent in professors’ office hours, especially with Dr. Allen in my combinatorics course and Dr. Moore in my modern algebra course. Being able to ask questions, talk through difficult concepts, and confirm my understanding in such a supportive and personal setting greatly enhanced my learning and helped me succeed as a student.

Some of the most fun I had during my entire 4 years came studying with my classmates, where hard work was paired with tons of laughter and friendship.

What is one thing you would want other people to know about the Department of Mathematics at Wake Forest University?

One thing I would want others to know about the Department of Mathematics at Wake Forest is how genuinely welcoming and kind the community is. There was never a day as a student where I didn’t walk into a class or saw a professor who didn’t have a smile on their face. The department fosters a collaborative environment where students are supported, encouraged, and treated with care. Faculty and students alike are always willing to help, always approachable, and always happy to be there. That sense of kindness and positivity made a lasting impact on my experience and is something that truly sets the department apart.

Is there anything you wish you knew while in the program at WFU or any advice you would give to current students?

I would encourage current students not to be afraid of pushing themselves or taking challenging classes. You are smart, well-supported, beyond capable, and surrounded by resources that want you to succeed. Struggling is part of the learning process, and you are never alone in it. Lean on your professors, classmates, and the department, and trust that growth comes from pushing yourself. You can do hard things!
